According to the latest retail sales statistics from the Automobile Market Research Branch of the China Automobile Dealers Association (Passenger Car Association), sales in the domestic narrow passenger car market reached 1.871 million units in August, a year-on-year increase of 28.8% and a month-on-month increase of 2.9%; Cumulative sales from January to August were 12.95 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 0.1%.
BYD continued to take the top spot in manufacturer retail sales in August, with monthly sales of 168,885 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 153.5%. Cumulative sales in the sedan market were 949,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 29.2% and a month-on-month increase of 5.1%. Sylphy continues to dominate the sedan sales list, and many models under the BYD and Volkswagen brands also have good sales performance.
Cumulative sales of SUV models in August were 836,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 30.5% and a month-on-month increase of 0.5%. BYD's Song series performed well and topped the sales list of all SUV categories. Haval H6 and Honda CR-V also continued their strong momentum in the past.
In the MPV field, overall sales in August were 86,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 11.3% and a month-on-month increase of 2.9%. The top two are still Wuling Hongguang and Buick GL8, with sales of 12,646 and 10,867 units respectively. GAC Toyota Sienna and Wuling Jiachen also have good sales performance.
In the new energy market segment, monthly sales reached 530,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 111.4% and a month-on-month increase of 9.0%. In terms of single-month sales, BYD's Song series occupies the top spot, followed by Hongguang MINIEV, and GAC Aion's AION S and AION Y also performed well.
In the luxury sedan and luxury SUV markets, the BMW 5 Series and Tesla Model Y took the top sales positions in the two major market segments. It is worth mentioning that the BMW Brilliance X5, which has ended price increases and returned to affordable sales, continued its booming upward trend, with sales reaching 8,139 units in August.
